Lead Mechanic Job Description

Title: Lead Line Mechanic

Schedule: Full time, with many weekends included. Hours vary throughout the year.

Every piece of fruit has potential value to the grower, the warehouse, and to the end customer. In order to maximize this potential and to provide good quality fruit, production lines must operate at full speed all year around and been maintained clean, safe and efficient. The Mechanic department is responsible for keeping the production facility operating smoothly and minimizing downtime. Maintenance needs to be provided in order to maintain equipment running properly and preventing breakdowns. The lead mechanic will be the person responsible for all the mechanic aspects of the production facility. Managing and leading a crew of mechanics to accomplish this goal is a key responsibility for our organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Managing a crew of 4-6 line mechanics, during day and night shift.
  • Creating schedules for maintenance and personal.
  • Supervision of the members of the mechanic department. This would include training, support, job assignations, follow up with given projects, etc.
  • Check-in at a daily basis with the equipment. Look for issues, damaged or warned out parts, undesirable noises, etc.
  • Working independently or with the team on reparations and mechanical work.
  • Follow up our protocols, S.O.P. and daily checklist to maintain a safe and clean equipment.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors, electricians and technicians for construction or repairs.
  • Attend necessary trainings, safety meetings and regular inspections.

Key Skills needed

  • Management and leadership skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of all equipment included in a packing line. This will include but not limited to motors and gearboxes, belts, solenoids, electrical, welding, plumbing, etc.
  • Preferred knowledge of Van Doren lines, Aweeta lines, Haley and Giro baggers and PLC’s.
  • Must be self-motivated, energetic and proactive in problem solving.
  • High organizational skills.
  • High communications skills.
  • Able to read and analyze detailed documents and regulations.
  • Able to implement effective and efficient solutions.
  • Able to research requirements, materials and contractors.
  • Able to order materials and parts.
  • Computer skills needed.
  • Knowledge of Occupational and Food Safety rules and regulations.

Applicant must be:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience working on packing lines.
  • Preferably English/Spanish bilingual
  • Able to work as a team and independently when necessary.
  • Some heavy lifting and physical work may be required.
