Job Purpose

From its Yakima headquarters, the Controller at Gilbert Orchards, Inc. shall have primary responsibility for maintaining the general ledger of the corporation and its affiliates with oversight of all accounting transactions related, but not limited to, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Grower Accounting. This position reports on the financial performance of the organization in conjunction with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller must be able to use data to provide metrics and decision making insights for senior management.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all inclusive. As a management-level employee, the Controller will occasionally be required to perform tasks typically handled by other employees. The following items, however, are of primary importance:

  • Design, implement, and manage the organization’s conversion from cash-based to accrual-based accounting for its internal records
  • Produce periodic financial reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Produce cost accounting analyses and reports for Operations managers
  • Provide financial analysis tools to evaluate new or existing projects, cost centers, or capital expenditures when necessary
  • Maintain budgets designed to mitigate risk and enhance the financial performance of the organization
  • Develop a functional understanding of the organization’s orchard, packing, and shipping operations
  • Continually monitor and update internal controls
  • Ensure compliance with pertinent state and federal laws and regulations
  • Understand current conditions and trends in the tree fruit industry


The Controller should have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration and be a licensed Certified Public Accountant and/or Certified Management Accountant. Related work experience in agriculture is strongly preferred.

Communication skills in written, oral, and presentation form are necessary to succeed, and this position demands expertise and creativity across multiple software platforms. The Controller must exhibit strong problem-solving ability, particularly in the identification of data sources, the ability to anticipate, and the appropriate allocation of time. The Controller should be able to demonstrate a history of leading process improvement in prior positions.
